That was hundreds of years ago. Now small wild herds of donkeys can be seen while driving around Bonaire. Bonaire’s donkeys have a distinctive strip across their shoulders which they inherited from their ancestor, the Nubian wild ass (Equus asinus africanus). The interplay between man and donkey on Bonaire has become more stressed over the years, and to help protect and take care of the donkeys, a small number of volunteers banded together to form the Bonaire Donkeys Help foundation, which now operates The Donkey Sanctuary (http://www.DonkeySanctuary.org) – a safe place for donkeys to live away from the growing challenges of life in the wild. This particular donkey was found near my home in the Hato section of Bonaire.
