The photograph was taken at dusk, when the setting sun’s amber color bathed the walls with warm, rich color. The slave huts were built in the 1850s for the slaves who mined the salt from Bonaire’s evaporative salt pans. Bonaire’s slave huts providing sleep quarters for two slaves at time. Use of the huts by slaves was discontinued in the late 1860s when slavery was abolished.
