Donkeys were first brought to Bonaire from Africa as beasts of burden to help with the harvesting of salt. That was hundreds of years ago. Now small wild herds of donkeys can be seen while driving around Bonaire. Bonaireís donkeys have a distinctive strip across their shoulders which they inherited from their ancestor, the Nubian wild ass (Equus asinus africanus).
