About the image
Perhaps the most glorious vantage point on Bonaire is Seru Largu (and known by various other similar spellings) – from where one can see all of southern Bonaire – ranging from nearby Republiek to Hato, Kralendijk, the airport, Belnem, and then on to the Salt Pans, Sorobon, Lac, and all places in between.

In 2000, a local community and church effort raised funds to build this grand monument at Seru Largu, but all too often, people are so entranced by the view of the island that they fail to look up and see the sky and the great beyond that this monument points towards. And at dusk with a clear blue sky, the shadows and reflections are particularly captivating.

About the image
Bonaire’s Town Pier is one of the must-do dive spots on Bonaire. That’s not because it’s pretty – it’s not – the sea floor is covered in tires, clothes, food scraps and countless other artifacts of man’s existence above the waters. But that environment also provides lots of food to marine species which they might otherwise have to compete for. As a result, the Town Pier is home to an amazing diversity of sponges, corals, crabs, eels, fish, shrimp, and all sorts of other critters, in sizes one normally does not see elsewhere. And the abundance of such life and growth makes it a safer place for creatures like this Longsnout Seahorse, which I found cohabitating with a sponge of similar color.

About the image
Turtles are among the few reptiles which live in our oceans, and due to excessive hunting, numerous species of turtles have become endangered or even extinct. On Bonaire all turtles, such as the Green Sea Turtles pictured on the opposite side, are protected by law, due to the work of Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (http://www.BonaireTurtles.org). I found these particular turtles some years back at the water’s edge, partially submerged, and the play of the sun’s light as it was diffused and reflected by the water’s surface caught my eye and my imagination.

This image is from a photograph taken during the children’s carnival parade on the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. The children’s carnival parade is an annual festive event, part of “Karnaval”, which features song and dance competitions, the election of a King & Queen of Karnaval, and numerous parades filled with countless floats and gaily attired participants. Bonaire’s Karnaval season is at the same time as the similar (and much larger) Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans. Karnaval has it roots in Catholicism, where such celebrations are a last hurrah prior to the 40 days of fasting, repentance, and self-reflection known as Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter. The final Karnaval parade, a night time event, occurs on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.
