Playa Frans is the northern-most private living area on the west coast of Bonaire, and as such closest to the rough but life filled waters at the northern point of Bonaire. Fishing is a daily routine for the people who launch their vessels from Playa Frans’ sandy shores, oft bringing back game fish for both their own tables and for consumption in local restaurants. Bonairean fishermen still use traditional hand lines to catch their fish, and disdain the large nets and long lines which commercial fishing fleets use. That was hundreds of years ago. Now small wild herds of donkeys can be seen while driving around Bonaire. Bonaire’s donkeys have a distinctive strip across their shoulders which they inherited from their ancestor, the Nubian wild ass (Equus asinus africanus). The interplay between man and donkey on Bonaire has become more stressed over the years, and to help protect and take care of the donkeys, a small number of volunteers banded together to form the Bonaire Donkeys Help foundation, which now operates The Donkey Sanctuary (http://www.DonkeySanctuary.org) – a safe place for donkeys to live away from the growing challenges of life in the wild. Price: $299.00 Salty Twilight - Print Details  by Jake Richter This image is from a photograph of the salt mounds at the Cargill Salt Works in the southern part of the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. The photograph was taken after sunset on a somewhat cloudy day, when the reflection of the sun’s last rays created a luscious pink sky, further shading the normally white salt mounds with rosy color. Salt is Bonaire’s number one export, and is derived by filling large “ponds” with sea water and then letting the sun’s heat evaporate the water, leaving salt behind. It takes 50 tons of sea water to produce one ton of salt. Bonaire’s salt is used primarily in chemical processes, but some enterprising Bonaire-based businesses also offer fragranced Bonaire salt as a bath additive.
