Artwork by Jake Richter

These are the salt mounds at the Cargill Salt Works in the southern part of the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. The photograph was taken after sunset on a somewhat cloudy day, when the reflection of the sun’s last rays created a luscious pink sky, further shading the normally white salt mounds with rosy color.

About the image
One does not often get to spend time with Santa Claus, but one winter day in New York City, at Rockefeller Center, I managed to do just that. As one might expect, he glided serenely across the ice on his skates, always ready with a helpful hand and friendly word. While he was on the ice, he seemed to glow and all else around him faded in comparison.

Shades of Growth by Jake Richter
Bonaire’s nature offers stark, thorny beauty, and the agave plant is a brilliant example. The depth offered both by focus and contrast in this image highlights how the agave grew and then grew again, with the thorns providing, at the same time, both a threat and subtle sensuality.

About the image
It was national Firefighter’s Day while I was in Washington, D.C. one fall day, and the Washington Monument was ringed by U.S. flags at half mast, with beautiful clear, crisp skies. The images from that day inspired this one of the sun shining through an American flag.

About the image
This image is from a photograph of the slave huts at the White Slave area on the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. The photograph was taken at dusk, when the setting sun’s amber color bathed the walls with warm, rich color. The slave huts were built in the 1850s for the slaves who mined the salt from Bonaire’s evaporative salt pans. Bonaire’s slave huts providing sleep quarters for two slaves at time. Use of the huts by slaves was discontinued in the late 1860s when slavery was abolished.

Limited Edition Prints available in three sizes.

About the image
When people come to Bonaire to dive and watch nature continue to move on around them, there are two creatures they most want to see. One of those is a seahorse. Sea horses are deemed rare in the Caribbean, mostly because they have amazing camouflage skills. They sway in synchronicity with the surrounding soft corals and share the same colors and textures as their surroundings. This particular sea horse, which is more slender than the typical Bonaire Longsnout Seahorse, was found with his tail wrapped around a rope sponge at a dive site on Klein Bonaire.

About the image
Most every morning, the aged and wizened fisherman rows his fishing boat out to Town Pier to catch bait fish, which in turn he uses to catch his meal for the day and perhaps a bit more to sell as he rows between prime fishing spots only he knows of. He covers a great distance – a surprising distance for one so old and frail looking. It’s slow and methodical, in the way he has fished for many decades and will hopefully continue to fish for many years more.

Limited Edition Prints available in two sizes.
